“Michael Gerth is a Berlin-based artist offering his heart and 18 years of experience to bring his sculptures to life. Starting with woodwork and stone, he now primarily works with pigmented concrete. He also experiments with ensembles in which the sculpture-characters commune to argue over topics such as destroyed nature, the sense of belonging, and reconnecting with nature.

These topics became important to him while answering many questions: How can we work together in peace? How can he find his own inner peace? And how do all other emotions, like anger, fear, joy, and sadness, fit into that peace? His creature creations carry some of the answers. So Michael invites you to listen closely, so you may hear what they want to tell you.”

My Process

I often conceive an idea from a sketch. Then I begin by working with clay. At first, the sketch is my main guidance. The second half of the modeling process is about my dialog with the sculpture and finding transitions and solutions with the work in 360-degree view. When the sculpture is ready, the next step is to make the mold. To finish a work, I cast the mold with concrete. Then with excitement, I open the mold to see the result.
